Kneeboard.

Abnormals…

Initial Climb MP(in.)= Maximum RPM=2700 Pitch Attitude(degrees)=+10 Flaps(degrees)=UP Airspeed (kts)=140 Rate of Climb(fpm)=+1500

Comment: Useful as you depart from an airport. It gives a good rate of climb at a safe airspeed that allows some visibility over the nose.

Cruise Climb MP(in.)=25” or maximum available RPM=2500 Pitch Attitude(degrees)=+5 Flaps(degrees)=UP Airspeed (kts)=155 Rate of Climb(fpm)=+800

Comment: Delivers a good compromise between climb rate and airspeed as you depart the airport area and head toward your destination. Setting the MP at 25”reduces the strain on the engines, and reducing prop RPM to 2500 cuts noise. Lowering the nose to a +5 pitch attitude improves visibility ahead, increases speed, and provides more cooling air to the engines. The rate of climb will decrease as you climb.

Level Cruise MP(in.)=Maximum available or 23 in. RPM=2300 Pitch Attitude(degrees)=O (Level) Flaps(degrees)=UP Airspeed (kts)=170 Rate of Climb(fpm)=0

Comment: Provides good performance for en route flight. Setting the manifold pressure at 23”and the RPM at 2300 delivers a good compromise between speed, fuel burn, and cabin noise. You can, of course, use a variety of other MP/RPM combinations listed in the aircraft operating handbook, but it’s easy to remember “23 squared.”

En Route Descent MP(in.)=20 in. RPM=2300 Pitch Attitude(degrees)=-2 Flaps(degrees)=UP Airspeed (kts)=175 Rate of Climb(fpm)=-500

Comment: Delivers a comfortable rate of descent and reasonable airspeed, especially when you’re flying in the clouds. Rapid descents can make passengers uncomfortable, and maintaining a moderate airspeed below the beginning of the yellow arc on the airspeed indicator is important if you encounter turbulence. Remember that as you descend, you must gradually reduce the throttle to maintain the target manifold pressure. Otherwise, the manifold pressure will creep up about 1”for every 1000 feet that you descend.

Expedited Descent MP(in.)=19-20” RPM=2300 Pitch Attitude(degrees)=-5 Flaps(degrees)=UP Airspeed (kts)=195 Rate of Climb(fpm)=-1100-1200

Comment: Useful when ATC asks for a high rate of descent or has held you high beyond your planned descent point. The airspeed is at the bottom of the yellow arc, so use this configuration only in smooth air.

Transition-Speed Level Flight MP(in.)=18 in. RPM=2300 Pitch Attitude(degrees)=+0 Flaps(degrees)=UP Airspeed (kts)=153 Rate of Climb(fpm)=0

Comment: Stabilizes the airplane in level flight at the maximum speed for extending the landing gear and approach flaps. Use this configuration as you approach the airport traffic pattern or during the initial stages of an instrument approach.

Level Flight in the Traffic Pattern MP(in.)=20 in. RPM=2300 Pitch Attitude(degrees)=+2 Flaps(degrees)=APR Airspeed (kts)=110 Rate of Climb(fpm)=0

Comment: Delivers stable, level flight at an appropriate speed in the traffic pattern around an airport. Use this configuration to enter and fly the downwind leg in the traffic pattern. These settings put the airplane comfortably within the white arc on the airspeed indicator, allowing you to extend full flaps as necessary.

VFR Final Approach MP(in.)=15 in. RPM=Set for 2500 Pitch Attitude(degrees)=-2 Flaps(degrees)=DN Airspeed (kts)=105 Rate of Climb(fpm)=-600

Comment: Delivers a stable, comfortable rate of descent when you’re aligned with the runway for a 1-2 mile final approach.

Short Final MP(in.)=12 in RPM=Set for 2500 Pitch Attitude(degrees)=-Flaps(degrees)=2 Flaps(degrees)=DN Airspeed (kts)=100 -600

Comment: Use this configuration when the landing is assured and you’re on short final. This arrangement puts the airplane near blue-line (best single-engine rate of climb speed) and provides a comfortable margin above Vmc should you need to go around.

IFR Approach Intermediate ManeuveringMP(in.)=17”-16” RPM=2500-2300
Pitch Attitude(degrees)+1 Flaps(degrees)=APR Airspeed (kts)=120 Rate of Climb(fpm)=0

Comment: For use while maneuvering during transitions, procedure turns, and at similar times during the intermediate phases of an instrument approach. It delivers a good compromise between maintaining a good speed for sequencing at busy airports and allowing you time to fly complex procedures while IFR.

ILS Descent MP(in.)=15 in. RPM=2300- 2500 Pitch Attitude(degrees)=-2 Flaps(degrees)=APR Airspeed (kts)=120 Rate of Climb(fpm)=-700

Comment: Configures the aircraft for an ILS approach. The numbers deliver a comfortable approach speed and rate of descent appropriate for a typical 3-degree glide slope (assuming little or no headwind or tailwind). Flying an ILS approach is an exercise in precision, so make very small, smooth adjustments to the power setting, pitch attitude, and heading to stay on the glide slope and localizer.
