History

Under the provisional designation VT-22, the Antonov OKB designed the An-22 Antei (Antheus, named after the giant son of the Greek god Poseidon) to carry cargoes up to 50 tonnes (115,250 lb) over distances of 3,500-4,000 km (2,175-2,486 miles) and for paradropping of cargoes of up to 15 tonnes (33,075 lb). Its NK-12MV (NK-12MA on production a/c) turboprops and AV-60 (5.6m-18'4") (AV-90, 6.2m-20' 4" on production a/c) contra-rotating propellers are the most powerful turboprop engines in service, delivering 14,600 kgp (32,190 lbs).

The first An-22 flew on 27 February 1965 from the runway at aircraft plant No. 473, Kiev-Svyatoshino. The runway was officially listed as having a length of 1,800 m (5,905.51') but Pilot Yuriy V. Koorlin was said to have measured it at 1,750 m (5741.47'). The An-22 was publicly revealed to the West at the Paris International Air Show in June 1965.

The An-22 was the largest transport aircraft of the time, and set a number of world records. Between November 1965 and January 1975, the Tashkent Aircraft Plant No. 84 delivered 66 An-22's.

Some notable features of the An-22 include the comprehensive navigation and precision drop avionics complete with three separate radars, a 14-wheel undercarriage (tire pressures can be adjusted from the flight deck to optimize the aircraft for different airfield surfaces), a reinforced titanium floor with integral rear loading ramp, four overhead gantries and two floor winches for freight handling, twin tails, and double slotted wing flaps. The main cargo hold is pressurized to a differential of 0.25 kg/cm3 (3.57 psi). There is a forward cabin, between frames 10 and 14, comprising 1 upper and 2 lower cabins, with provision for 21 passengers. 

On October 26, 1967, the An-22 set 14 payload to height records. The pinnacle of which occurred when I. Ye. Davidov piloted the An-22 with a cargo of 100,400.6 kg (221,383.3 lb) of specially manufactured concrete slabs, each weighing 6 to 12 tonnes (13,230-24,460 lb) to an altitude of 7,848 m (25,749'). It also established the record for carrying a maximum payload of 104,444.6 kg (221,443 lb), to a height of 2,000 m (6,562'). Although several of these records were broken by later a/c, the An-22 still holds 41 records. 

A number of speed records were also set on February 19 1972, averaging 593.32 km/h (368.67 mph) over a 2,000 km (1, 242.7 mile) closed circuit. Two days later averaging 608.45 km/h (378.07 mph) over a 1,000 km (621 mile) closed circuit, both records set with a payload of 50,000 kg (110,231 lb). Several more speed-with-payload records were to follow in 1974 and 1975. 

On July 18, 1970, An-22, c/n 00340207, CCCP-09303 with 26 persons onboard, became another victim of the infamous Bermuda Triangle. No cause is known and after an extensive search only a swamped life raft and a few packages were recovered.

The Antheus has been superseded by the larger, jet-powered An-124 "Condor". As of August 2003, some 15 An-22's were still being utilized by the Russian Air force, but were scheduled to be phased out "in the nearest time". A few more are still said to operate in The Ukraine.

FS2004

Dimitri Samborski's fine An-22 is designed for FS2002. Unaltered, it has some problems in FS2004. This set of files will address many of those.

Aircraft.cfg and Antonov An-22.air have been modified to improve the Center of Gravity and other issues.


INSTALLATION

1. Unzip the included files into a temporary directory making sure the "use folder names" option is checked.

2. After unzipping the package, you will find 4 directories and this Readme:

    Effects
    Sound
    AIRCRAFT

3. Copy the content of each directory into their respective sub-directory in FS9.

4. Go to the AIRCRAFT\Antonov AN-22, open the directory named "Panel.V1" and copy the following files into "Panel.V2" folder:

    ENGINEER.bm
    NAVIGATOR.bmp
    NAVIGATOR2.bmp
    SAU.bmp
    UPPER.bmp

DO NOT COPY NAVMINI.bmp and Panel.cfg

NOTE: The An-22 model, as created by Mr. Samborski, is from Batch 2 (V2), but after viewing a photo of the Batch 1 (V1) nose, a decision was made to create both versions. This package includes 2 liveries, one for each nose version, Aeroflot for V1 and Antonov Design Bureau for V2. It also includes a startup guide.

5. Sounds. The sound within this pack is of a very low quality, therefore we STRONGLY RECOMMEND you to download Dimitri Samborski's Tu-114 and use the sound files from it. The Tu-114 is truly one of the finest a/c available for FS2004. If you already have the Tu-114 installed, alias the An-22's sound to the Tu-114's sound folder. The Tu-114 is available at:

7. Download and read the Il-62M manual. Available at:

NOTE: This panel is based on the Project Tupolev IL-62M which is, without doubt, one of the most sophisticated panels available for FS2004. For those of you familiar with the PT IL-62M, there should be absolutely no problems mastering this panel. For those of you NOT familiar with the PT IL-62M, we STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you download the manual and read it carefully, paying special attention to the section describing the Navigation system, including usage of the autopilot.

Errata:

There are several details that are not correct in the model portion of this release.

The model was originally from FS2002, so there have had to be several compromises, as we do not have    access to the source.

There are no wing landing/taxi lights.

CoG problems still exist and trimming is extremely sensitive in some systems.

The model is Batch 2, but included are nose positions for both Batch 1 and Batch 2. Why? We like Batch 1 and know it is not accurate for this model.

Gauge placement in the nose position was dictated by the 2D panel. They should be more accurately placed in fuselage panels.

Gauges represent no specific plane. They can't. The An-22 is in its "senior" years and many of them differ due to "upgrades". Perhaps a more accurate representation would be to show missing gauges in the panels as is often seen in photos of the real a/c. We chose not to.

No attempt has been made to represent the throttle panel between the pilot and co-pilot. This is by choice even though accuracy suffers. This will be addressed if ever a new model with VC is created by the original modelmaker.

The main and nose gear is "spongy" in some systems. All attempts to correct this have produced results far from perfect.

 The plane cannot be made to "sit" as can the real Antheus.

 We have deliberately tried to give it a "heavy" feel.

Finally, we've left out one rivet. Find it and you win an all expenses paid trip to the destination of our choice. No Hints!
