| It will probably come as no
surprise to anyone that the Nimrod airframe was based on the De Havilland Comet
4C. Many changes were needed to make the aircraft suitable for it's
intended maritime role. The overall fuselage length was reduced by six feet six inches, to that of the earlier Comet 4. The now famous 'double-bubble' fuselage configuration was created to allow the addition of an un-pressurised section designed to accommodate the weapons bay. In order to offset the reduction in directional stability resulting from the increased keel area associated with the lower fuselage, a dorsal fin was later added to the existing fin. Finally, an 'upturned canoe shape' fairing was fitted to the top of the fin in order to house an Electronic Surveillance Measures antennae. Much more powerful Rolls Royce Spey turbofan engines were specified and necessitated some alteration to the wing centre-section. All but 11 of the original Comet fuselage windows were removed and three, bubble-type, observation windows were added towards the forward fuselage section; the flight deck windows were altered to afford flight deck crew members a better visual lookout essential for maritime, low level flying. |

XV230, the first of 46 MR1
aircraft entered service in August 1969 and flew until it's loss over
Afghanistan during September 2006.
The MR1 gave sterling service during the Cod Wars between Iceland and the UK
over fishing rights. During the Falklands war (Operation Corporate), several MR2's combed the sea for enemy submarines.
The Nimrods took part in Operation Granby (the Gulf War 1990/1991), the NATO operations against Serbia in 1999,
Operation Telic (the Iraq war in 2003 and beyond) and the campaign in Afghanistan. They also took part in several search
and rescue (SAR) operations in the North Sea including the rescue co-ordination during the Piper Alpha rig disaster
Because of the search and rescue role, Nimrod aircraft often appeared in the media in connection with major rescue incidents. In August 1979 a number of Nimrods were involved in finding competitors in distress in the disaster-stricken 1979 Fastnet race, and directing helicopters to the scene. The Alexander Kielland was a Norwegian semi-submersible drilling rig that capsized in March 1980 with a major loss of life. Six different Nimrods searched for survivors and took it in turn to provide a rescue co-ordination role, involving the control of 80 surface ships and 20 British and Norwegian helicopters; control became particularly important as the visibility deteriorated. In an example of the search capabilities, in September 1977 when an attempted crossing of the North Atlantic in a Zodiac inflatable dinghy went wrong, a Nimrod found the collapsed dinghy and directed a ship to it. |

were flown to museums around the UK, XV226 is shown here at
Bruntingthorpe home of the Cold War Jets collection The R1 still flies from RAF Waddington but is scheduled to fall victim to the treasury axe in 2011
