description= ALPHA Simulations 2005\n\nFirst flown in 1969, this Cold War bomber is extremely fast, at both low and high altitudes. Powered by the same basic engine intended for the Tu-144 supersonic transport, the Tu-22M featured variable-sweep wings along with a host of other advancements. However, the aircraft lacks range and is actually classified as a medium, rather than strategic, bomber. The Tu-22M-3 is one of the most important sub-types in the Russian arsenal, with greatly increased payload capability. About a dozen reconnaissance versions, the Tu-22MR, were also built. Plans to replace the type have been put on hold, and it remains in service today as one of the most numerous and important bombers in the Russian Air Force. The Ukraine also operates several of the craft, which were inherited during the breakup of the former USSR.
