The MI-17 is an upgrade, equipped with stronger Izotov TV3-117 engine, vibration damper, lightweight fuselage, improved electronics and avionics. The production started in 1981. In 1988 the new TV3-117VM engine was build in ( MI-8MTV ).\n\nThe designation MI-17 is used in export, the russian army use the MI-8MTV marking. The MI-17 can be differentiate from MI-8 because the tail rotor is at the starboard side and the TV3-117 engine is shorter than theTV2-117. The helicopter can be used several purposes:\ncargo and troop transport, can be equipped with missiles, bombs, small arms and cannons.
